Revenstar
Mysterious Music Machine

The Revenstar M3 Mysterious Music Machine is a jukebox/program source server that, on boot up immediately starts playing a user-defined library of digital audio files. This small device uses less than 50 watts of power and with only two small low-velocity fans, is nearly silent. It is available in both a desktop and 1RU rackmount form factor. It boots from a solid state disk and runs FreeBSD for enhanced reliability and security. When connected to the network it plays tracks at random from its library. The program library can be accessed by any computer connected to the same network, which see it as a file share. Adding new program material is as simple as dragging and dropping files to the shared folder.

Applications

The M3 is ideal for providing custom background music for retail, clinics, restaurants, and other public facilities as well as a program source for broadcast. The file bank is divided into two folders; music can be placed into one and custom commercials, greetings, or announcements into the other. A configuration file lets you set the number of songs between commercials/announcements and the number of commercials to be played before resuming music playback. As an option, a log of which files were played and at what time can be saved for billing purposes.

Security

The shared folder can be password protected to prevent unauthorized access to the library. The machine runs only the file sharing program and media player and is firewalled to ignore requests for other services. As with any file share device (such as a file server or NAS) it should be connected to a private network to prevent abuse. Software upgrades are unnecessary when used in a trusted environment.
